Jaki Nelson Interview takes us behind the scenes of her new remix of Loreen’s ‘Is It Love,’ sharing insights into her intuitive creative process and more. Following the release of her new remix of Loreen’s ‘Is It Love’, Jaki takes us behind the scenes of the project. She shares insight into the collaboration, creative process, and the ideas that shaped the final track. Hi Jaki, how are you? I’m finally feeling like a member of the living again! I got the super flu right before Christmas and it knocked me out for 3 weeks before a complication from the coughing landed me in urgent care. Still recovering from the complication, but the actual sickness has at last subsided. Congrats on the release of ‘Is It Love’ we wanted to ask, what’s the most challenging part of making a new version of a song that’s already so well known? It’s finding that balance between honoring what people already love about the song and letting it exist confidently in a club-forward space. You want the emotional core to stay intact, but you also have to be brave enough to reimagine it for the dance floor. If you could go back to day one of the creative process for this song, is there anything you’d do differently now? Honestly, not much! That’s rare for me to say. Sometimes distance gives you clarity, but in this case the instincts were right from the beginning. The process felt very smooth and intuitive. Was there a lot of “back and forth” in the studio, or did the vision click instantly? The vision clicked almost immediately. I had exactly one production note on the entire song – a nerdy music theory thing – and that was it. This is a very danceable track, where is your dream club to hear this played and why? I would absolutely die to get a chance to play this track live at Ushuaïa Ibiza as part of a hybrid DJing/live performance style show. Their space compliments the live element so effortlessly, and the energy there is unmatched. Are you a “morning person in the studio” or a “late-night session” type of artist? No one ever asks me that! Late morning, for sure. Getting me out of bed before 9 a.m. is a challenge, but I have a home studio, so I usually go straight in and work until around 8 p.m. That said… I’m a bit of an addict, so it’s not uncommon for those sessions to stretch past midnight. What’s the one piece of gear you can’t live without right now? There’s WAY more than one, but if I absolutely had to narrow it down, that would have to be my Neumann u87 – a singer can’t do anything without a great mic! Was there a specific reference track you kept in mind to get that specific club energy? I actually wasn’t in the room for the production on this one! Polyma+h sent me the track fully fleshed out. From the first listen, I knew I needed my voice and my name on it. How do you manage the tension and release in the track to make sure the peaktime impact really hits? In this case, the song was already written, so the building blocks were all there already, so my role is to lean into the story and find my own perspective within it such that the honesty shines through. At that point, it’s all about setting up the builds emotionally and making sure they land at the right moment for the dance floor. Did any happy accidents happen during the session, like a sound or a vocal run you didn’t plan but ended up keeping? Happy accidents are a core principle of how I operate. I loop-record sections over and over until I fall into this almost trance-like state. I give myself permission to mess up, to experiment, and to push things emotionally, and that’s exactly where the magic happens. With this release, she continues to build momentum through collaboration, experimentation, and a clear sense of identity. As her sound evolves and her presence expands within the Electronic music space, this project stands as another confident step forward with more to come on the horizon.
