Indestructible came together in a session shaped as much by environment as collaboration. Lea Key walked into a studio with decades of history behind it, met John Grand with a clear idea of what they wanted to express, and the track started to take form through a simple conversation. The emotional tone was already baked into the instrumental, and she focused on writing something that matched its intensity without overstating it. What stood out in talking with her was how direct her process is. Everything begins with a single line that sets the direction. From there she builds the melody, phrasing, and shape of the topline around real experiences pulled from travel, people, and the moments she carries into the studio. No theatrics, no heavy framing — just clear ideas that translate well into dance music. This interview goes into how the collaboration with York and John Grand unfolded, how she approaches writing for club-focused tracks, and where she’s headed next as both a vocalist and songwriter. Interview With Lea Key View this post on Instagram A post shared by LEA KEY (@leakeymusic) How did the idea for your release with York and John Grand first take shape, and what excited you about joining that session? First of all, it has been a pleasure working with both of them on the track. The track already had a strong emotional vibe, so I wanted to match that energy with a clear message. But the main idea for the song really began when I stepped into the studio — a space where artists like Billie Eilish, Adele, and even Michael Jackson had once recorded. Such a historical place! John and I had a really great and open conversation about what we wanted to express, and that talk sparked the concept for the track. The mix of that inspiring environment and our shared vision made the session feel special from the first minute. I focused on themes of resilience and emotional truth — moments where you learn how strong you really are. My goal was to make people feel fearless and powerful while they listen to the song. Many interviews focus on producers, so I’d love to hear your side. What starts a vocal idea for you: melody, phrasing, or a single line? That’s a great question! For me, it usually starts with a single line — something that captures the emotion or core idea of the track. Once I have that, the melody and phrasing follow. I also love writing about my travel experiences, especially when I’m having sessions in different places. That’s honestly my favourite thing. I travel a lot for my work, and I’m super grateful that I get to see so much of the world — not only through my own eyes but also through the people I meet. Being on the road gives me so many new impressions and emotions, and those often become the inspiration for a new topline. I love translating this experience into something people can sing along to. Each city, each studio session, and each conversation adds another layer to my sound. And sometimes, a rhythm on its own can be inspiring too. Screenshot You’ve worked with Armada, A State of Trance, and Enhanced. What did those experiences show you about vocals in club-focused tracks? Those experiences showed me that even in club music, people connect deeply with vocals that carry real emotion. I’ve seen how a strong topline can turn a great track into something people remember. I love creating dance anthems that have energy but also give people something meaningful to hold onto. Collaborating with Armada, A State of Trance, and Enhanced has been exciting because there’s so much passion and professionalism behind the scenes. Hearing our track “Indestructible” on A State of Trance Radio and watching Armin play it was a powerful moment — it reminded me why I do what I do. What advice would you give someone who wants to start their music career? My biggest advice is to just start — even if you don’t feel ready yet. It’s normal not to have all the answers right away. You learn by doing. Be consistent, keep creating, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes — they’re part of your growth. Surround yourself with people who inspire you, ask questions, and stay true to your own voice. Most importantly, enjoy the process. If you stay curious, keep experimenting, and put your heart into the music, the right opportunities will find you. What direction are you exploring next as an artist and songwriter, and what can listeners expect as you move through your upcoming releases? I want my music to be a bridge between emotion and empowerment — something that reminds you that growth starts outside of your comfort zone. The new songs carry a soft intention and a deeper purpose. A big part of my message revolves around KEY MOMENTS — those experiences that stay with me, shape me, and change my direction in life. They teach me what stories I want to tell. I’ve realized how powerful certain moments in life can be — the ones that shift the mindset, open the heart, or completely change the direction. I want my songs to feel like
