The word fusion gets thrown around a lot these days, and it’s hard to find an artist who’s able to combine styles into their very own thing. So, when we found out about an artist fusing traditional Caribbean sounds with silky electronic pop, we had to find out more. As it turns out, Kalpee is one of a kind. The Trinidad & Tobago-based artist recently released his newest EP, “Dougla Boi“. He’s been steadily building his own emotional vernacular for years, but here, across six tracks shaped by New Calypso and influenced by dancehall, R&B, and afrobeat, he steps fully into the center of his cultural constellation. The title, drawn from the Trinidadian term for someone of mixed African and Indian heritage, is the foundation for a project that treats heritage as harmony rather than contradiction. On “Under,” the EP’s lead single, he threads vulnerability through rhythm with a clarity that feels both intimate and expansive. On “Everybody,” the chart-climber with Full Blown, he reaches for unity with the conviction of someone who’s lived its urgency. All six tracks feature addictive melodies and crystal-clear, atmospheric production, bridging electronic chill pop with Kalpee’s vocals perfectly. A former calypso kid performing his father’s songs, a teenage frontman playing Trinidad’s stages for over a decade, a would-be marine biologist who instead taught himself production, guitar, videography, and design – Kalpee has built every rung of his career with his own hands. Even a near-fatal car accident in 2018 didn’t slow him; instead, it fueled a run of music defined by sincerity, warmth, and a sense of purpose bigger than chart metrics. That commitment extends into Iza Island Wave, the platform he founded to give Caribbean artists a global stage. What began as an act of community care has become a cultural movement stretching from SXSW Austin to London, Jamaica, Singapore, and beyond. “Dougla Boi” distills all of this: the healing, the cultural dialogue, the restless innovation. It’s the work of an artist shaping not just songs, but a future for Caribbean music that is expansive, generous, and approachable for any listener. If you’re into great melodies and chill beats, this is a can’t miss listen. Stream “Dougla Boi” here.
