Listen to a lovely new EP that we’re digging. Dias Ridge has just released a hot two-track release, Interstice / Balance. The EP represents a sophisticated evolution of the producer’s sound, sitting within the Melodic House genre while incorporating Breakbeat movement and intricate rhythmic contrasts. Moving away from the “safer” tropes of the genre, the release focuses on detailed arrangements that maintain club functionality while preserving a distinct sonic personality. Melodic, broken-beat-tinted and arguably very mysterious-like, ‘Insterstice’, the A-side of the EP plays with elements that fall a bit outside of the usual boxes which “define” Melodic House, and instead ventures out to find the melodies in music box sounds and warm, yet slightly uncanny sounds – in the best possible way. Contunuing the broken beat pattern, ‘Balance’ expands on the concept of the music box, nostalgic sound. Still playful and even still mysterious with oddly pitched vocals, the song takes on a slightly more direct aim towards melody, using piano chords and arpeggios that feel like a hug a to the soul. My personal favourite out of the two, because I’m a sucker for those songs that make you fly. The release is underpinned by Ridge’s philosophy of navigating the modern “noise floor” of the music industry. In a sit-down regarding the EP, Ridge emphasised the importance of tuning into the “signal” amidst the ease of AI-assisted knowledge and information overload. He advocates for a disciplined approach to the craft, citing daily practice and “less serious” artistic endeavours like photography as essential tools for staying curious. By stepping away from the computer and utilising analogue workflows, Ridge aims to ensure his music remains an interpretation of life rather than a product of convenience. As a milestone for the label, Interstice / Balance serves as a referendum on long-term artist development versus vanity metrics. Ridge remains vocal about the difference between genuine listener connection and platform data, prioritising a deep understanding of cultural context in his work. The 50th release on Magnetic Magazine Recordings effectively showcases these instincts in motion, offering a clear vision for the label’s future trajectory in the electronic music landscape.
