After a rather long break after the beginning of their latest chapter with the release of their fifth LP Bigger Than All Of Us, Tony McGuinness, Jono Grant and Paavo Siljamäki, better known as Above & Beyond, have come back to the spotlight, with the launch of one of their most sought-after IDs, ‘When I Look In Your Eyes‘, out now. The track, featuring the unmistakable warm vocals of our Siren of the Sea Justine Suissa, serves not only as the first track to break the ice after A&B’s album adventure, but also as the inaugural single of the trio’s 25-year-old record label Anjunabeats’ next very awaited compilation, Anjunabeats Volume 17. Spanning 35 tracks across two mixes, Anjunabeats Volume 17 is the first product of the sort in four entire years, ending a longer-than-usual period for devoted fans. Curated between Above & Beyond’s London studio as well as on the road during their global tour, the compilation captures the evolving sound of Anjunabeats, spotlighting both long-standing collaborators and a new generation of artists shaping the label’s future. ‘When I Look In Your Eyes’ What a track this is. Marking a middle point between the calmer entries in the BTAOU album and the boys’ earlier club-focused entries, ‘When I Look In Your Eyes’ has the best of both worlds. On one hand it brings together the sensitive, piano-riddled side of the Above & Beyond formula that makes us all love them, and on the other hand, it serves you relentless tension and sweet Progressive Trance release to fit the lasers when listening live. We’ve heard Justine sing in a variety of styles over the years, and this song particularly leans toward making every letter she says not only remarkably catchy but also very easy to sing along to. Long notes and few words are the secret that help this tune be so catchy, and the calm nature of the vocals contrasts beautifully against the rhythmic, strong club drop coming halfway through. I keep catching myself singing “Ever since the staaaaaart…” when I’m out for a drive, or cooking a meal, or basically anything. Shoutout to Paavo’s pianos, which take centre stage. Also, can we talk about the artwork? I’m so loving this retro-style phase we’re going through. This colour in particular reminds me of ‘Beautiful Together’ — so, a very welcome nod to the OceanLab era, for what’s essentially an OceanLab tune.
