The [dweller] Canary Current festival takes place in the last week of February, celebrating Black History Month with a diverse lineup. The event features artists from Príncipe Discos, a notable label in international club music, showcasing rhythms from the African diaspora around Lisbon. DJ Marfox, a pioneering figure on the label, delivers a frenetic Afro-Portuguese dance style known as Batida, blending influences from reggaeton and baile funk. DJ Firmeza is recognized for his fast-paced, percussion-heavy sound that induces trance. Nídia, a prominent young producer and one of the few women in this scene, combines synths and raw beats, drawing on Jersey Club and baile funk. JAGU4R opens The Atrium with a bass-driven mix of experimental hard dance and techno, representing Atlanta’s underground scene. Leonce, a veteran of the US dance music landscape since the 2010s, infuses his work with experimental electronica and Southern energy, challenging genre norms through improvisation. Ge-ology, a self-taught vinylist, connects psychedelic rock, dub, and boogie in his dancefloor strategies.
